The Sunday Reset: 10 Things Moms Can Do Now to Make the Week Easier
A simple weekly reset to reduce your mental load, get organized and stop starting every Monday already behind.
The Sunday Reset
Sunday doesn’t have to mean spending your entire day meal prepping, cleaning your house from top to bottom and getting everyone’s clothes organized for the week.
Honestly, who has time for that?
A good Sunday reset is much simpler.
It’s about taking a little time to look ahead and deal with the things that are likely to make your week harder before they become problems.
Think of it as giving your future self a little help.
You don’t have to do everything on this list. Even doing a few of these things can make Monday - and the rest of your week - feel noticeably easier.
Here are 10 things I like to check before a new week begins.
1. Look at the calendar
Before you do anything else, look at the next seven days.
Check for:
appointments
school events
sports activities
birthdays
work commitments
meetings
anything out of the ordinary
Then ask yourself:
“What’s coming up this week that could sneak up on me?”
Maybe Wednesday is packed with activities. Maybe your child needs something for school on Tuesday. Maybe you have an appointment across town first thing Thursday morning.
Knowing about it now gives you a chance to prepare instead of figuring it out when you’re already running late.
2. Decide what’s for dinner
This one can save you from the dreaded question every single afternoon!
You don’t need to plan seven elaborate meals.
Pick 4-5 easy dinners for the week and leave a night or two open for leftovers, takeout or whatever life throws at you.
Before making your grocery list, check what you already have in the fridge and pantry.
You might discover that the chicken in your freezer + the pasta in the pantry + a few vegetables can become dinner without another trip to the store.
The goal is not fancy meal planning.
It’s knowing what you’re going to eat before everyone is hungry.
3. Check what you’re about to run out of
This is one of those little things that can prevent a surprisingly big headache.
Do a quick check of the things your family uses constantly:
diapers and wipes
snacks
lunch supplies
toilet paper/paper towels
pet supplies
school supplies
anything you regularly need
Ask yourself:
“What are we going to run out of this week?”
Add those things to your shopping list now. I keep an ongoing list on my phone and a written one in my kitchen.
Future-you will be very happy you did.
4. Do a 10-minute house reset
Notice I said 10 minutes, not “clean your entire house.”
Pick the areas that tend to create the most chaos and give them a quick reset. For me, it’s the entryway and my kitchen countertops.
Maybe for you that’s:
The kitchen sink
The living room
The laundry area
The kids’ backpacks
The play area
Put things back where they belong, clear the obvious clutter and stop.
You are not trying to make your house perfect.
You’re just making Monday start a little less chaotic.
5. Check everyone’s clothes
Take a quick look at what’s happening during the week. A quick glance at the weather doesn’t hurt either.
Does someone need:
a sports uniform?
a specific outfit?
weather appropriate shoes?
something special for school?
an item for an event?
Finding out Sunday that the soccer uniform is buried at the bottom of the hamper is much easier than finding out 5 minutes before you need to leave.
Ask yourself:
“Is there anything anyone needs this week that isn’t ready?”
Then fix that one thing.
6. Get everything out of your head
This might be the most important one.
You’re likely already thinking about appointments, groceries, school forms, work, laundry, birthdays, errands, meals and approximately 47 other things.
Stop trying to remember all of it.
Write it down. It can be one giant messy list of everything that’s floating around in your head. I use ChatGPT to simplify my giant list.
Prompt:
“Organize this list into what needs to happen today, this week, later and what I can delegate. Then give me a realistic plan for the week to get this done.”
7. Pick ONE thing to do ahead
Pick just one thing that will make your week easier.
Maybe that’s:
chopping vegetables
prepping lunches
washing uniforms
ordering groceries
scheduling appointments
restocking pantry items
That’s it, just one thing!
8. Create a launch pad
All those items that need to leave the house everyday can have a special space.
a large open shoe crate for each child
a bench to put sports bags on
a bin for library books
hooks for coats or backpacks
The goal is to avoid the morning scavenger hunt. It doesn’t need to be pretty. It just needs to be functional!
9. Look at Monday specifically
Transitions from a weekend are never easy. Ask yourself “what could make Monday stressful?”
getting everyone out the door?
breakfast?
an early meeting?
thinking about dinner after work?
Pick one problem and solve it Sunday. A tiny amount of planning can make a big difference!
10. Then stop
The point of a reset isn’t to create more work. You just have to make tomorrow a little easier than it would have been otherwise.
Less remembering. Less rushing. Less mental load. That’s the goal.
Because moms shouldn’t have to do everything the hard way. <3
